Learn for Life seeks reading tutors

United Way of Portage County’s Learn for Life Reading Program is seeking second- and third-grade reading tutors to help at schools throughout Portage County for the 2019-20 school year.

Learn for Life utilizes trained volunteer reading tutors who meet individually with students, a tutor commitment of a total of one hour per week. Tutoring sessions are individualized and based off of the student’s needs. Program data is collected and assessed throughout the year. Tutors are able to pick a time, day, and school that works best within their schedule and they work with the same students throughout the year.

The goal of the Learn for Life program is to increase reading achievement in our community so that all children, in Portage County, who are able, are proficient in reading by the time they finish third grade.

“By focusing on improving reading skills in the third grade, together we can make a lasting difference in the lives of children by giving them the tools to achieve their dreams,” said Kelly Skeels, United Way of Portage County Community Services Program Specialist.  “If you want to make a difference in the life of a child, get involved! Consider volunteering as a trained reading tutor.”
