CAP Services - UPLIFT 2 Generational Learning
In 2006, the Chen family embarked on a new chapter of their lives, arriving in the United States as refugees. Both parents, determined to build a better future, attended high school and proudly earned their diplomas. They got married and started a large family, blessed with ten children, including one with special needs. Their hard work paid off when they bought a house, and life seemed to be on an upward trajectory.
However, in 2022, their world was turned upside down when the husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, but the aftermath brought on paranoid episodes and a significant decline in his mental health. Seeking support, the family decided to move closer to relatives in Portage County.
In August 2023, they enrolled in the UPLIFT program but had to unenroll in September due to relocating to a place where family could better assist with the husband's condition. Unfortunately, after an episode, the husband was institutionalized. The client moved back to Portage County to be near her family, living with relatives while searching for suitable housing for her large family.
By November 2023, the client re-enrolled in the UPLIFT program. With our assistance, she applied for housing. During this challenging period, the husband took the children, causing great concern. The police were called, and an Amber Alert was issued. Thankfully, the husband and children were found safe, but charges were brought against the father, leading to his incarceration. The children's mental health was severely impacted, and the client struggled with stress and worry about her husband's mental state.
Despite these hardships, in July 2024, the client secured a part-time job. By August 2024, she was able to find housing for her family. Now, she continues to work part-time, and the children are safe and happy in their new home, eager to stay at their current school. The Chen family's journey is a testament to their resilience and hope. Through the support of the UPLIFT program and their determination, they have navigated immense challenges and continue to build a brighter future.
