Aging and Disability Resource Center - Preventative Health Education
In early 2023, Ron walked into a diabetes support group at the Lincoln Center feeling frustrated by his symptoms, overwhelmed by the information he had found online, and unsure of what to believe. His symptoms had been wearing him down, and with limited time during doctor visits, he felt like he was navigating it all alone. From the moment he arrived at the diabetes support group, he felt welcomed. The warmth and understanding from the group gave him a sense of connection he hadn’t felt in a long time. He left that day with helpful information in hand and a renewed sense of hope.
Ron learned about Healthy Living with Diabetes, a 7-week, evidence-based program designed for people living with diabetes, pre-diabetes, or caring for someone with the condition. The idea of self-management resonated deeply with him. He’d been searching for answers and guidance, and this program sounded like the perfect opportunity. He signed up for the next available workshop, set for Spring 2024. By the end of those seven weeks, Ron felt more confident in his ability to manage his diabetes. He began checking his blood sugar daily, made real changes to his eating habits, and became more mindful with his medications. A few months later, he took another big step by joining StrongBodies, another evidence-based program at the Lincoln Center that helped him establish a regular exercise routine.
Now, he proudly shares that he has lost weight and is maintaining healthier A1C levels. He feels better than ever, physically, emotionally, and socially. Along the way, he’s built lasting friendships with people he met through the programs, and they still keep in touch over the phone. Ron feels better than ever and credits not only his continued hard work, but also the welcoming community and support he found at the Lincoln Center.
