Aging and Disability Resource Center- Preventative Health Education

In early 2023 Ron attended a diabetes support group at the Lincoln Center feeling frustrated by his symptoms and overwhelmed by the information he found online and elsewhere. He wasn’t sure what to believe or trust and had limited time with his doctor. Right away, he felt welcomed and connected with the other participants, and he was given information to take home.

He also learned about Healthy Living with Diabetes that day, a 7-week evidence-based program that helps people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and those who care for someone with diabetes learn strategies to manage the condition. He liked the idea of self-management and the workshop sounded like a great opportunity to learn everything he’d been wanting to learn about. He signed up for the very next one, hosted in the spring of 2024. After the workshop, he felt more confident in his ability to manage his diabetes and continued working on his health. He began monitoring his blood sugar levels daily and improved his dietary habits and medication management.

A few months later he began exercising regularly by attending StrongBodies, another evidenced-based program offered at the Lincoln Center. This year, he proudly reports that he has lost weight and is now maintaining lowered a1C levels since participating in the Healthy Living with Diabetes workshop. He also reports making friends that he keeps in touch with over the phone. Ron reports feeling better than ever now, thanks to his hard work that continues to pay off and the support he’s found at the Lincoln Center.
